Salman Khan takes a rick back home after car break down

Mumbai: Salman Khan went to Twitter to make a point when one his SUV broke down last night for the umpteenth time. And the superstar had to take an auto rickshaw to get back home.

He tweeted “Kal raat ko jab gadi bandh padi had to take a rick home, really enjoyed the rickshaw ride : )(sic)”

It seems that the auto wallah surely would have had a story to tell when he got back home.

Khan was miffed with the way his expensive car has been breaking down over the past few months. And the bad customer care service he has been receiving over it. Knowing the star power of Salman, it would have been a pretty bad PR day for the car manufacturers.

Toyota launches limited edition Fortuner at Rs 24.3 lakh

New Delhi: Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) launched a limited edition of its sports utility vehicle Fortuner TRD Sportivo for the festive season priced at Rs 24.26 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Designed by Toyota Racing Development (TRD), the limited edition will be available in the 4×4 MT variant of the Fortuner, the company said in a statement. Only 400 units of the Fortuner limited edition will be sold till December 2013, it added.

Commenting on the launch, TKM Deputy Managing Director & COO ((marketing and commercial) Sandeep Singh said: “With an aim to provide newness, we have introduced the Fortuner limited edition for the festive season.” Fortuner has been the leader in its segment since launch and has sold more than 54,000 units, he added. The SUV was launched in August 2009. Ahead of the festive season, the company had recently launched the New Innova and the limited editions of sedan Etios and Liva hatcback.

Fisker Automotive sold to Hong Kong based investor firm

Facing bankruptcy, the Fisker Automotive company has reportedly been sold to a Hong Kong based investor company owned by Richard Li

Fisker Automotive, the makers of the Fisker Karma, the highly acclaimed plug-in Hybrid has reportedly been sold to a Hong-Kong based investor firm owned by Richard Li. In 2009, Fisker was awarded a $529 million loan from the United States Department of Energy under a U.S. program to promote green vehicles. Fisker also got the backing of prominent investors world over and won rave reviews for both it’s design and the Karma’s plug-in hybrid. 

In mid-2011, the Department of Energy halted payments to Fisker as the latter cited various delays in the launch of the Karma despite over 3,000 pre-bookings. In 2012, amidst a shaky launch and news about the Doepartment of Energy’s taking away funding, many senior Fisker executives in cluding do-founder Henrik Fisker resigned. The Li group was also an intiial investor in Karma Automotive group worked closely with Henrik Fisker in the past and after his departure from his company, has continued to work with Li’s group. 

The Department of Energy decided to auction Fisker’s green-energy loan on Friday after they said they ‘exhausting any realistic posibility’ that it could recover the amount owed by Fisker. Fisker Automotive has not made a single car for about 15 months and had laid of most of it’s employees in April to save costs. 

Li’s group has reportedly beaten two other groups that were in the run to acquire Fisker. Although the exact value of Li’s bid has not been made public, bidders had to offer at least $30 million to particilate in the Fisker Loan deal. The U.S. Department of Engery has said that the winner would be publicly announced as soon as negotiations were completed and the sale was finalised.

Harley-Davidson launches 2014 Street Glide in India at Rs 29 lakh

The American manufacturer of choppers has launched its all new Project Rushmore Street Glide in India. It will be launched as completely built units (CBUs) and is priced at Rs 29 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The bike is now available for order at all 11 Harley dealerships across India. As part of their development strategy, Harley started taking inputs from existing customers and started implementing these changes on their newer models, calling the idea Project Rushmore. Halogen lighting, linked brakes with ABS, torquier engine, tweaked suspensions, infotainment system and changes to the styling and body are what’s new to the 2014 Street Glide.

Range Rover Evoque XL coming in 2016

Land Rover plans to launch a larger, lightweight Range Rover Evoque XL to slot between the existing car and the Range Rover Sport. According to a report by Autocar, the new model is codenamed L560 and is expected to be launched in 2016.

The report also says L560 will be based on the same aluminium platform as the new family of compact Jaguar models and will be made in the same new facility, currently being built at Solihull.
The report suggests that the Evoque XL could achieve annual sales of up to 80,000 units and is likely to be the most profitable model of the five body styles (four Jaguars and this new Range Rover) being planned on the new aluminium platform. 

L560 is also likely to become Range Rover’s most economical model, thanks to a combination of the lightweight aluminium architecture and the all-new ‘Hotfire’ four-cylinder engines currently being developed by JLR. Indeed, the majority of Evoque XL models are likely to be powered by four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines (further reducing overall weight) in various states of tune.

The addition of this model is likely to round off the Range Rover family for the medium term.

When the engine is mated to an automatic transmission, it accelerates to 100kmph from stand still in mere 4.8 seconds, however, it takes 0.2 seconds more in manual transmission. The vehicle has an electronically limited top speed of 250kmph. For South African market, the BMW M235i is tagged at 503,079 South African Rand (INR 3117438.69).

The other model, BMW 220i will be powered by the 2.0-litre 4-cylinder unit that churns out maximum power output of 181bhp and 270Nm of top torque. The vehicle accelerates to 100kmph from stand still in mere 7 seconds and has a top speed of 235kmph. It is priced at 366,257 South African Rand (INR 2269591.34). The last model, BMW 220d Coupe gets the 2.0-litre diesel unit that develops 181bhp and 380Nm of torque. With automatic transmission, the vehicle sprints to 100kmph from stand still in mere 7.1 seconds and has a top speed of 235kmph. The BMW 220d is tagged at 393,000 South African Rand (INR 2435310.17).

The vehicle will be made available in seven different colors – Alpine white, Black Sapphire metallic, Estoril Blue metallic, Glacier Silver metallic, Melbourne Red metallic, Mineral Grey metallic and Mineral White metallic. Volkswagen working on Ducati powered XL-1 Sport

It seems now Volkswagen is working on one such fire cracker called the XL-1 sport. It is based on the XL-1 small car which has taken the world by storm thanks to its efficient design and hybrid diesel mill. The car was revealed to a gathering at Vienna University by Ferdinand Piech, Chairman of the VW group.

The standard car speaks subtly of efficiency, the XL-1 Sport screams performance and will be powered by a 1.2-litre Ducati sourced engine, making it a potential track day cruise missile. The engine, sourced from the 1199 Panigale, is a V-twin that produces 191PS and 1234Nm of torque. The standard car made mostly of carbon fibre weighs 795kgs and this includes the presence of the electric motor. The XL-1 Sport ditches the electric motor so it should potentially weighs even lesser giving it a high power to weight ratio. 

It also gets sporty design which seems to include a body kit, special alloy wheels and some racing decals. We expect racing seats and more carbon fibre for the interiors too. The XL-1 is likely to go into production next year but this just a concept vehicle and maybe ready in time for next year’s Worthersee festival.

Bajaj to launch its RE60 quadricycle by end-2014

The Indian government has issued a draft notification to classify the quadricycle as a commercial vehicle under the Central Motor Vehicles Regulations (CMVR) and once this is approved, quadricycles will be officially eligible to ply on Indian roads. The notification will stipulate the standards to be followed by the vehicle here.

Accordingly, Bajaj Auto has said that it plans to introduce its RE60 quadricycle sometime towards the end of 2014. 

To distinguish the quadricycle from passenger cars, there are weight and top speed restrictions on these vehicles. Also, these vehicles will only be allowed for the taxi and cargo segments and not as personal passenger vehicles. The RE60 is ready for production and will be rolled out from Bajaj Auto’s Aurangabad facility in Maharashtra, pending government sanction. The company also has plans to export the vehicle to some international markets. The RE60 is powered by a 200cc, single cylinder, four-strokethat is good for an expected 18bhp and is likely to return a 30-35kpl fuel consumption figure.
