MPVs for 2014

MPVs for 2014
Although the Indian economic scene seems to be in a bit of a lull, the average middle class family is always looking to upgrade their standard of living in general. The most obvious upgrade for most families is that of their automobile. In recent times, the segments that have seen the most growth are the ones that offer both practicality and space at a price point that doesn’t burn a hole in one’s pockets i.e. the small SUV and MPV segments. A Multi Purpose Vehicle (MPV) does exactly what it sets out to do: carries a family in as much comfort as an average sedan, has the space to rival a large SUV and is just as practical as the family hatchback. In short, the MPV has become popular simply due to the fact that they are a fantastic value proposition to the typical price sensitive Indian buyer. Here are 5 new MPVs that should make it to our shores in 2014!
 Honda Mobilio
Expected Launch: Late 2014
Expected Price: Between Rs 8-12 Lakh
Honda Mobilio Front
Based on the Honda Brio hatchback and the Honda Amaze sedan, the Mobilio is Honda’s answer to the Maruti-Suzuki Ertiga and the soon to be launched Hyundai MPV. The Mobilio was officially introduced at the 2013 Indonesia International Motor Show and will be offered with seven seats.
The Honda Mobilio will be powered by Honda’s all-new 1.5 Litre i-Dtec engine which produces 100PS of peak power and 200Nm of peak torque. The Mobilio will also have a petrol option and will be powered by the 1.5 Litre i-Vtec engine that currently does duty in the Honda City. The Honda Mobilio might also be offered with a factory LPG/CNG option but details on that front seem to be a little sketchy. The Honda Mobilio will be available in both manual and automatic versions with the Automatic expected to have features like paddle shifters.
At first glance, the Mobilio will look very similar to the Brio and the Amaze but will feature a larger grille with a more prominent chrome styling feature running across the front of the car. The rear though will be completely new with large tail lights and an angular recess to house the license plate. The floating D-Pillar and the kink in the window line along the side will help to break the visual bulk of the Honda Mobilio.
The Honda Mobilio will share its dashboard with Brio and Amaze although we assume the Mobilio will be offered with a two-tone beige interior so as to give it a slightly enhanced feel of luxury. Expect Mobilio to be priced between 8-12 Lakh when it is introduced in the second half of 2014. In fact, considering Honda’s recent price strategies, we wont be surprised if a base version of the Honda Mobilio is priced even lower.

10 Ways Women Travelers Can Stay Safe in India

SONY DSC
As soon as I cleared customs and grabbed my suitcase around 4:30 AM on a cool Tuesday morning at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport I walked past the throngs of people waiting for friends and relatives to emerge through the automatic doors and headed right past the non-sanctioned cabbies who milled around the taxi stand and continuously called out to me, “Ma’am, need a cab? “Ma’am….a cab?”
Of course, there was absolutely no way I would get into one of their cabs. Their cars had no numbers on them. I looked. They were hustling hard for tourists to hop in and earn a few rupees.  Seasoned traveler that I am I know it’s important to go to the cab stand at airports no matter where in the world you are from New York City to Rio. Sure, there is a small risk of being swindled into paying more, but it’s far better than trying to save a few bucks with a cheaper cabbie.
After paying and finding my numbered cab, I hopped in the back seat of one of Delhi’s traditional black and yellow taxis and made my way to my hotel slightly before the sun came up in a country I had never been to before. It wasn’t lost on me that I was a woman in the back of a cab in Delhi and that anything could happen. I just prayed that I would get to the hotel and everything would be fine. I had put myself in a vulnerable position. No one could help me then.
Thankfully, everything turned out fine, but I have heard stories where travelers haven’t been as lucky – that they had been robbed by the cabbie on the way to their hotel. Thankfully, nothing like that happened.
After spending five days in Delhi I learned how important it is to be safe. I had not worried about that anywhere else in the world, but Delhi is different. The amount of people has a lot to do with it coupled with being a woman . We have all heard about the horrific rape of the Delhi student who died because of her injuries earlier this year. Here are a few things I learned about staying safe in Delhi from women who live there.

  • Don’t go out at night if you can help it unless you have your own car or driver.
  • Try not to go out alone – especially at night.
  • When using the Metro, ride the women’s cars. I learned this myself with cross road after a very uncomfortable 45-minute Metro ride to east Delhi where men gawked at us mercilessly.
  • Always hire a hotel driver to take you around town. It’s more expensive, but safer. Safety matters!
  • Know where you are going! That is, know addresses and the general vicinity of where you are traveling to.
  • Always ride with your windows up in private cars and cabs because people always try to sell you stuff when traffic stops. They may reach into the car or knock hard on the windows.
  • Be wary of schemes and swindlers and second think everything. Use common sense. If it doesn’t sound right, don’t do it!
  • Always let others know your whereabouts. That means even writing down and emailing cab numbers when you hop in.
  • Cover up as much as possible unless you want Indian men staring at you and/ or following you down the street.
  • Stay at a nice hotel. We stayed at the Radison Blu Dwarka. It was wonderful, safe, and had impeccable service. Don’t try to “rough it” with accommodations.

  • I am lucky. I can blend into India very easily, especially if I put a head scarf on. I loved the care and attention and advice the male workers at the hotel gave us. They cautioned us not to walk around the hotel – mostly because it was hot – but also because it could be dangerous for two western women. They helped us secure private drivers and directions. They were great.
  • ·         The best thing you can do for yourself when you’re traveling is walk fast and with purpose like you know where you’re going even if you don’t. Confidence can repel many who want to take advantage of western travelers.
  • Cross road is roadside assistance that is any time help us and anywhere in India.

AAUI is a non profitable non Government Organisation (NGO) engaged in providing allied services to their members and also imparting awareness and education in road safety related areas.

The Association is well patronised by high officials of the Government, members of the public and the business corporate. Late Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the First President of the Republic of India honored the Association by accepting to become its first Patron-in-Chief in September 1950.

Thereafter the successive Presidents of India have been bestowing this honor on the AAUI. Besides this, the Lt-Governors of Delhi and the Chiefs of the three Services have been the patrons of the Association as a matter of tradition. The Association was founded on 20th September, 1950.

AAUI is rendering useful services to the public and the Transport Department, Police and Indian Customs. Its performance can be well judged from the fact that the Association had collected and deposited with the Transport Authority a sum of Rs.80 lakh (approx.) on account of collection of one time road tax, and fees introduced by the City Government during 1986-87. It rendered a great help to the motorists who could pay the tax almost at their door-step.

AAUI is making all out efforts to expand its membership base . The AAUI generally has a say in the matters related with Driving, Road Safety, Traffic Discipline and to help domestic and foreign tourists. Efforts are being made to train a large number of motorists in First Aid and AAUI Honorary Roaming Ambassadors  have also been involved to observe road infrastructure and traffic related problems. They are supposed  to  communicate the same to AAUI which disseminates the community feedback to the concerned authorities for redressal.

The AAUI is a significant contributor to the growth of land related foreign tourism. The custom authorities at more than 130 boarders and checkposts allow duty-free passage to the vehicles brought by foreign tourists into India on the strength of carnet-de-passage (CPD) to which the Federation of Indian Automobile Associations (FIAA) with AAUI and other regional associations is the counter-guarantor. AAUI has pioneered a world class driving training school with driving simulators equipped  with Skoda Technology. More than 1,50,000 drivers have benefited in developing and evaluation of their driving  skills.
