Parking proves deadly at Outer Ring Road

Hyderabad: Illegal parking of heavy vehicles on the Outer Ring Road is leading to several fatal accidents. Though the ORR has a lay-by near the crash barrier for breakdown vehicles to park, motorists continue to halt on the highway especially during the late hours, breaking the lane discipline of the expressway.
Over-speeding four-wheelers crash into these parked vehicles which they cannot see clearly because of the poor lighting. This has caused many deaths. The HMDA’s ORR project officials have written to the Cyberabad Police to fine these illegally parked trucks heavily.
In 2012, about 2,134 deaths in road accidents in the state were due to illegally parkedvehicles. In October 2012, a speeding car hit a parked trolley, and four persons died in the crash on the service road connecting the ORR at Thondipally village in Shamshabad.
In the same month four persons died and 10 suffered injuries when a speeding Tata Safari rammed into a vehicle at Rallaguda on the ORR.
Anand Kumar Samuel, ORR project director HMDA said that the ORR has a dedicated paved shoulder on both ends of the lane expressway for parking vehicles that have broken down.
But overloaded and over-sized trucks are being parked on these lanes, which is illegal; even halting on the expressway is prohibited. From a distance one assumes that these stationary vehicles are also on the move, and this causes accidents.
